Why does gold elude women at the Olympics? Are male eventers athletically superior?

No female has ever won individual Olympic gold at the Olympics. With the unstoppable, Michael Jung claiming gold at Rio for the second consecutive Games, we will have to wait another four years to maybe, finally have a female reign supreme. While sleuthing around the internet, I stumbled upon this article – Does Olympic horse-riding have a gender problem?. The author summarized how women were outnumbered and outperformed in Rio by the men and then went on to discuss possible reasons for this end result. Do men’s greater physical strength give them an advantage? Do women who have children…

FEI President celebrates top equestrian sport and clean Games at Rio 2016

FEI President Ingmar De Vos had double cause for celebration this week after confirmation that all human and equine samples taken during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games had returned negative. “Keeping our sport clean is a central part of our daily work at the FEI, but to have back-to-back clean Games in London and Rio is something for any sport to be proud of, especially as we were testing for more substances than ever before”, the FEI President said today. “And that’s on top of absolutely brilliant equestrian sport in Rio, so we really have something to celebrate!” A…

The most recognizable running shoes in the Olympics aren’t on Usain Bolt’s feet!

The most recognisable brand of running shoes, and definitely the fastest running shoes in the Olympic movement are not on the track and field athletes in Rio 2016. They’re the shoes on the only four-legged athletes at the Games – the horses! Whether it’s heels up in Europe to keep the good luck in, or heels down in Asia to stop the bad luck dropping in, the horseshoe is a universal sign of good luck. And the hardest working shoe fitters in Rio are the team of British and Brazilian farriers working round the clock to keep the well-heeled…

Rio 2016 – Where super heroes were born and debacles were plentiful

Well that’s it for another four years. Eventing at the Rio Olympics was, for the most part, just plain weird… It started with a series of disasters for several riders. Michael Jung’s European Championship winning ride Fischer Takinou suffered an eleventh hour injury, forcing ‘Michi’ to downgrade to his world, Olympic and European championship winning partner, La Biosthetique Sam. Andreas Ostholt suffered some sort of shoeing failure and despite making it through the trot up, was relegated to the subs bench. Jock Paget can only have been left asking ‘WTAF??’ when the ever-consistent Clifton Lush decided to give himself…

In a cliff-hanger of a contest it came down to the last four into the arena to decide the result.
