Ireland wins team gold – 2014 Euro Junior Champs

Anna Wilks on Touch of Pleasure, European Juniors Championships 2014 individual gold medal winner

Seven riders were all within a rail of the gold medal and anxiety was running high with riders and spectators at the European Juniors Championships 2014, earlier today. Clear rounds were attainable but fence eight, the blue oxer, and the fence nine, the two stride combination, ruined clear rounds for many riders. However, the course was no issue for the overnight leader, Great Britain’s Anna Wilks, 17. With a flawless round, she easily won the individual gold medal on her home turf finishing on her dressage score of 41.20.

Gold – Team Ireland
The luck of the Irish or good riding brought the gold medal victory to Ireland for the second year in a row. All three team riders had clear show jumping rounds. Pressure was on Cathal Daniels, the last team member to jump. Dropping only one rail would mean the Germans would keep their overnight gold medal position. He never came close to disappointing. Jumping an immaculate round, he easily secured  his team the gold. In addition, his clear moved him from bronze to silver individually. Tina Kruger, German individual rider, who was in second place on her overnight score did have a rail, dropping her to sixth place and clearing the way for Cathal.

Silver – Team Germany
Three costly rails dropped the Germans to silver. Although Jerome Robine’s clear round, earned him the individual bronze.

Bronze – Team France
Despite two rails, the French won team bronze. Justine Lacroix was the final rider to jump for the French team, her clear round saved them from losing their placing to the Brits.

Fourth – Team Great Britain
The Brits finished in fourth, despite giving it their best with three clear stadium rounds. The surprising fall of Emily King on cross-country was a real game changer for them. Emily has tweeted that she is fine with just bruises. We are so pleased that she is doing well and Brookleigh is fine also.
